According to one legend, the seedlings were brought from Dalmatia (the historical region of Croatia) to France by the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius Probus. Another version says that the seedlings got to France by accident: the ship that transported them on the Rhône River was attacked by pirates. The vines ended up in the city of Vien. Hence the name of the variety. As for the true origin, DNA tests showed that Vionnier was not Balkan at all, but French. Recommended serving temperature 12-14°C
